Description: Body elongate, slightly compressed. Big mouth thrusting, caudal peduncle short, with the caudal fin in a straight line ending in adults. Two dorsal fins, first dorsal hard radios, the broad-based second dorsal bilobed. Scales cycloid, medium, easily detached.
Color: slate blue back and sides to the midline of the body, then silver and white on the ventral face.
Size: Adult females measure up to 90 cm and males up to 60 cm.
